Can somebody please explain how this adventure mechanic works?

My guess would be the fully-glossy cards were the ones attached to the kiosk to prevent damage from constant use.⁣ Unlike the previous two cards mentioned in this article, there have been an almost continuous supply of these hole-punched Pichu cards on eBay for the past 3 years which I can’t imagine will run out any time soon
